Islamic music. The chanting of the Koran is the most common form of Islamic ‘music’. It is heard five times a day during prayers. The rhythms are free and
improvisatory. There are very few if any instruments used. Plucked lutes and bowed lutes are important, other instruments used would be an oboe.
The Muslim society has been through a big controversy over the nature of music. To sustain a moral society it is sought to control vocal and instrumental music. The Koranic chantis the ideal ‘music’ for Muslims other music is simply tolerated. The Koranic is not considered music because its ‘too good’ to be associated with music such as Islamic hip-hop, pop, ect. The uneasiness about music is still an issue in the Muslim society today.
